In 2013 Honda Motor Co. imported 88,500 vehicles from Japan to the U.S. but exported 108,700 American-made vehicle to foreign markets.
It was the first time Honda has been a net exporter from the U.S. since the company began making cars in Ohio 32 years ago.
Honda CEO Takanobu Ito declared more than a year ago that the company's U.S. plants might eventually triple the current ratio of vehicles they export to 20%.
Last year Honda built nearly 1.8 million Acura and Honda brand vehicles in North America. The total included a record 1.3 million units made in the U.S., more than 8% of which were exported.
The company currently ships American-made Civic and Accord sedans, Pilot and MDX crossover vehicles and Odyssey minivans to more than 50 countries, led by Saudi Arabia, Russia and the United Arab Emirates.
