Hella KGaA Hueck & Co.has developed a warning system that uses interior lights and light strips to direct a driver’s attention to potential problem areas.

The system would integrate current safety systems, such as blind-spot detection or forward-looking cameras, with interior lights. If a sensor identifies a bicyclist approaching to the right of the vehicle, for example, the corresponding A-pillar or door-panel light strip would be illuminated.

Hella says visual cues are more intuitive than audio alerts. They also are less disruptive, company officials point out, noting that current bells and whistle-like warning sounds can startle or confuse motorists.

The supplier is demonstrating the technology to potential customers and hopes to launch a commercial application within the next three years, company officials tell WardsAuto.
