Harley-Davidson Inc. has made an unspecified investment in Alta Motors to help the Brisbane, Calif.-based company further develop and launch an all-electric motorcycle in 2019.

Harley unveiled its Project LiveWire prototype electric motorcycle in 2014. The motor was mounted longitudinally under the frame and used a bevel gear to drive a belt to turn the rear wheel.

Alta has supplied its Redshift architecture to Caterpillar, General Motors and Toyota for lightweight EVs. The technology includes a 5.8-kWh lithium-ion battery and a 40-hp electric motor that generates 122 lb-ft of torque.

The Redshift bulkhead functions as the outer motor casing, the cooling circuit for the motor, inverter and transmission case for the gear reduction. The system also connects the rear suspension, airframe, forged monocoque chassis and skid frame.
