General Motors Co. says it will add production at its factory plant in Hamtramck, Mich., of a version of the Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid sedan to be sold in Australia as the Holden Volt.
The company plans to start making the Holden model soon, and the vehicle is scheduled to go on sale in Australia in November.
The Hamtramck facility, which has about 1,560 employees, already makes the Chevy Volt; its European version, the Opel Ampera; and the Chevy Malibu midsize sedan.
The plant will be idled for four weeks, starting in mid-September to retool for the next-generation Chevy Impala fullsize sedan that goes into production in early 2013. GM disputes reports that it suspended work because of disappointment with Volt sales.
The company expects the hybrid's volume to top 2,500 units in August, thus setting a record for any month since the vehicle's December 2010 launch. Even so, dealers held an 84-day supply of Volts on Aug. 1 compared with the industry ideal of 60 to 65 days.
