General Motors Co. says the replacement ignition switches it will begin installing in 1.6 million recalled vehicles next month will get a new part number to eliminate confusion about the repair.
GM disclosed last month that the defective switch was redesigned in 2006 to fix a problem that allowed the original design to be jarred out of the "on" position.
But the revised switch used the same part number. Reuters reported earlier this week that both versions of the outwardly indistinguishable switches are still available in the aftermarket.
Delphi Automotive plc, which has supplied both prior switches, is producing the units that will be used in the recall. GM says it will have about 60,000 of the new switches available by April 7. The company predicts it will take seven months to complete the recall repairs.
