General Motors Co. says it will hire at least 700 engineering, software and urban mobility jobs at three facilities in Ontario, Canada. The expansion over the next few years will bring the total number of GM engineers and software developers in Canada to about 1,000.
The company will add the staffers at an existing tech center in Oshawa, and two new facilities: an urban mobility center in Toronto and a software development center in Markham. GM also says it will spend $10 million to expand its cold-weather test facility in Kapuskasing.
GM’s announcement comes one day after the head of Unifor, the union that represents GM hourly workers in Canada, threatened to strike U.S. carmakers unless they pledge to preserve jobs and invest in their Canadian facilities.
