General Motors Co. is lowering the price of its next-generation Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid due later this year.

The 2016 model will be base-priced at $34,000. GM says that compares with $35,200 for the 2015 model, although Chevrolet's own Web site says the 2015 Volt currently starts at $34,200.

The redesigned 2016 Volt can travel 50 miles on battery power alone, about 12 miles farther than the first-generation car. The onboard piston-powered generator gives the new model an additional range of 370 miles, 40 more than the current car.

GM figures owners of the upcoming model will be able to make about 90% of their trips using battery power alone.
