General Motors Co. says 14 of its 2016 model Chevrolet vehicles will be able to link smartphones to their infotainment system via the new Apple CarPlay or Google Android Auto platforms.
Both systems enable drivers to connect a compatible smartphone to the vehicle's center display through a USB cable. Operators can then play music, make and receive calls, receive and listen to e-mail messages, display navigation maps and get audio trip instructions. Many of the features can be activated with voice commands.
The platforms connect to the outside world through the smartphone's own cellular signal or, in many cases, with the vehicle's built-in 4G wireless service.
GM notes that the Chevy rollout will involve more models than any other automotive brand. The capabilities will cover models sold in China and South America as well as the U.S.
