General Motors Co. plans to add a third week to the traditional two-week summer break at its plant in Hamtramck, Mich., that builds the Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid sedan. The factory is currently in the midst of a five-week production suspension that will end on April 23.
The company says it is trying to avoid excess inventory of Volts amid disappointing sales. GM had 6,300 of the cars in stock at the end of February, or a 154-day supply, according to Ward's AutoInfoBank. A 60-day supply is considered ideal.
But GM says it sold more than 2,000 Volts in March, nearly double February's volume. The company also says it has 7,000 pre-orders for the European version of the car, the Opel Ampera. GM adds that it might cancel the extra one-week summer suspension if demand continues to strengthen.
