General Motors Co. says it will increase production of its Chevrolet Bolt this year by an unspecified level to meet rising demand for the all-electric sedan.
Last year the company made about 23,400 Bolts. More than half the cars were sold in California, where the model outsold all other EVs.
CEO Mary Barra is urging the federal government to help sustain EV demand by extending current tax subsidies of $7,500 per car. Under current rules, the incentive phases out when a manufacturer reaches cumulative EV sales of 200,000 units. GM is expected to surpass that target before the end of 2018.
The carmaker has plenty of capacity to make more Bolts. The car currently is produced on the same line as the piston-powered Chevrolet Sonic subcompact car by a single work shift.
