General Motors Co. says it will begin shipping left-hand-drive versions of its Chevrolet Beat minicar from India to Chile in the first quarter of 2015. Production of the cars will begin in the second half of this year.
The car, known in the U.S. as the Spark, will be produced at GM's factory in Talegaon. The company did not disclose its export sales target for the Beat, which is its best-selling model in India.
GM says the export plan reflects the company's growing confidence in its India supply base and the desire to better utilize the plant. The Economic Times estimates GM used only 28% of its capacity in India last year. That compares with an industrywide average of 55% utilization.
