General Motors Co. confirms the Cadillac ELR, a two-door extended-range hybrid, will debut at the end of next year. GM Inside News, citing an anonymous source, reported the plan in May.

The ELR, a production version of the Cadillac Converj concept car, will use a variation of the Chevrolet Volt's powertrain. That system can travel about 30 miles in electric mode and another 270 miles when its gasoline engine-powered generator kicks in.

GM will produce the ELR at the plant in Hamtramck, Mich., that also makes the Volt and its European variant, the Opel/Vauxhall Ampera. The company says it is spending $35 million to prepare the facility for the new model.
