General Motors Co. says it will add 1,000 workers at the plant in Flint, Mich., that builds the all-new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra HD (2500/3500) heavy-duty pickup trucks.
Many of the new workers are expected to come from GM facilities in the U.S. that are scheduled to close over the next year. As part of a broader initiative announced in November, the carmaker said it will shut its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly and Warren Transmission factories in Michigan; Lordstown Assembly in Ohio; and a Baltimore facility that produces electric motors, hybrid transmissions and heavy-duty gearboxes.
GM has been widely criticized for the closures by President Donald Trump, unions and local lawmakers, all of whom are calling for the carmaker to find new products for the plants.
Opened in 1947, Flint Assembly is GM’s longest-running facility in North America. The 6 million-sq-ft facility builds about 250,000 trucks per year.
