General Motors Co. has warned Canadian labor union Unifor that it might shutter its SUV factory in Ingersoll, Ont., unless its members end their strike there, Reuters reports.
The walkout—the Canadian auto industry’s first in 21 years—began on Sept. 17 over job security demands. Unifor insists that GM name CAMI its lead plant for the hot-selling Chevrolet Equinox built there. The designation would make the factory the first to add jobs and the last to eliminate them.
GM warns that it may instead relocate CAMI production to two facilities in Mexico that began assembling the Equinox and its GMC Terrain sibling in April. Relocating the Terrain to Mexico eliminated 600 jobs in Canada.
GM has “declared war on Canada,” fumes Unifor President Jerry Dias. An unnamed GM official tells Reuters the union’s lead-plant demand has created problems that hadn’t existed before.
