General Motors Co. declares a rosy future for electric cars, but it also says it won't hit its target of putting 500,000 such vehicles on the road by 2017.

General Motors Co. declares a rosy future for electric cars, but it also says it won't hit its target of putting 500,000 such vehicles on the road by 2017.
GM has sold 180,800 EVs so far, including only 27,300 last year. The company concedes that cheap gasoline and a surge in EV models from other carmakers will thwart its original sales goal.
But the company, declaring "the future is electric," says it remains committed to EVs. Plans are on track to debut the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt in 2016. Unveiled in prototype form at the Detroit auto show in January, the five-door hatch promises a 200-mile range.
