General Motors Co. plans a global recall of 779,000 crossover vehicles to replace rear hatch support struts that could wear out prematurely and fail, allowing the hatch to hit the user. GM reports 56 injuries linked to the defect.
The campaign involves 2008-2012 model Buick Enclave, 2009-2012 Chevrolet Traverse, 2007-2012 GMC Acadia and 2007-2010 Saturn Outlook crossovers. About 88% of the vehicles are in the U.S.
All affected units are equipped with a power liftgate that slowly closes the hatch with the push of a button. The system includes a device that is supposed to ensure the hatch won't slam down even if the struts are worn. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the system may not be able to do so.
NHTSA says GM dealers will update software that controls the liftgate motor.
