General Motors Co. tells India's Economic Times it might use the expertise of Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. to develop an ultra-low-cost car to compete with Tata Motors Ltd.'s Nano sedan.
"I wouldn't rule out anything," says Timothy Lee, president of GM International Operations, who tells the newspaper, "When you harvest from your partnerships the collective wisdom of other cultures, it's incredible what you can do."
Lee offered no specifics about GM's potential interest. But the newspaper notes he appears to signal a sharp change in attitude at the company, whose executives said earlier they didn't think GM could compete with the Nano's €1,900 base price. The company previously said it might turn to its Chinese partner Liuzhou Wuling Automobile Co., with whom GM makes inexpensive minivehicles, to develop a low-cost car for India and other developing markets.
