General Motors Co. will borrow technology from its next-generation Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid in the hybridized 2016 model Chevy Malibu sedan due a year from now.
Hybridized Chevrolet Malibu powertrain
The hybrid powertrain will include a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine and a modified two-motor drive unit from the Volt. The latter system will boost net powerplant output to 182 hp and contribute assist during acceleration.
The car will carry an 80-cell, 1.5-kWh lithium-ion battery packaged above the rear axle. The unit can briefly propel the car at speeds as high as 55 mph on electricity alone, according to the company.
To improve fuel efficiency, the hybrid Malibu will be fitted with such aerodynamic tweaks as grille shutters and a lower ride height. GM predicts the car will deliver combined city/highway fuel economy greater than 45 mpg.
