General Motors Co. has introduced the Chevrolet Sail U-VA supermini hatchback in India in a bid to boost its share in a segment that accounts for 38% of the country's car market.
The car replaces the Aveo U-VA hatchback and sedan.
GM India President Lowell Paddock tells AutoBeat Asia that the company hopes a more competitive minicar will help it capture a bigger piece of a segment that is growing 48% annually.
The new India-built car a version of the China-made Sail that rides on GM's new global small-car platform has been customized for the local market. The Sail U-VA has a base price of 444,000 rupees ($8,100) and is offered with 1.3-liter turbocharged diesel or 1.2-liter gasoline engine.
GM builds the cars at its plant in Talegaon and makes the engines in Pune.
The Sail U-VA is the fifth model GM has launched in India this year, following refreshed or next-generation versions of the Captiva SUV, Cruze sedan, Spark small car and Tavera MPV. The company will debut the Chevrolet Enjoy MPV and a sedan version of the Sail U-VA by year-end, according to Paddock.
