Barnes was most recently VW of America's vice president of customer experience and previously served as COO of at that unit.
In his new job, Barnes will oversee GM sales in China, India, the rest of Asia, Australia and the Middle East. He succeeds Susan Docherty, who became managing director of Chevrolet Europe in January. Barnes will join the Shanghai-based unit on May 15 and report to Tim Lee, president of GM's international operations.
VW says Rawdon Glover, executive vice president of group aftersales, will handle Barnes' former duties while the company seeks a permanent replacement.
