General Motors Co. says its dealers have replaced more than 491,000 defective ignition switches whose design has been linked to 13 fatalities.
GM launched recalls in February to repair 2.6 million affected cars. The replacement switches are being produced by Delphi Automotive plc, the company that made the original GM-specified component.
The recalled switch can be jostled out of the "run" position by a bump in the road or the driver's knee, thus turning off the engine and cutting off the power steering, power brakes and airbag system.
Delphi says it has manufactured more than 1 million replacement switches. It aims to double that number by the end of this month. GM has said it expects to have all the switches it needs before the end of October.
