GM Expands Ignition Switch Recall by Another 971,000 Vehicles

General Motors Co. is extending its global recall of 1.6 million vehicles for faulty ignition switches to cover an additional 971,000 units.
The original recall applied only to 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, 2005-2007 Chevy Cobalt and Pontiac G5 small cars, 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky sports cars and 2005-2006 Canada-only Pursuit small sedans.
The broadened campaign covers all model years for those vehicles.
GM expanded the recall because 90,000 of affected cars have already had their ignition switches replaced by units afflicted with the problem that prompted the original recall: They can be jarred out of the "on" position while the vehicle is moving.
The company says it isn't feasible to track down those components, largely because the original-design switches and an upgraded version introduced several years ago share the same part number.
GM aims to rid all affected cars of possible problems by replacing the ignition switches in every one of them. The new switches will be identified with a new part number.
