General Motors Co. has lowered the base price of its tiny Chevrolet Spark electric car to $26,000 in an effort to jumpstart sales. The EV previously started at $27,600.
The electric Spark, still more than twice the retail price of its piston-powered sibling, currently is being offered in California and Oregon. Chevrolet will introduce the car in Maryland this summer.
GM sold about 1,100 Spark EVs in the U.S. last year. The company notes that cash discounts and tax credits can cut the new price to $15,000.
GM is the latest EV seller to trim prices in America. Last autumn Ford Motor Co. knocked $6,000 off the price of its Focus EV, now at $29,200, after cutting the sticker $4,000 in 2013. Nissan Motor Co. lowered the price of its Leaf electric sedan by $6,500 when it moved production from Japan to Tennessee two years ago. The Leaf currently starts at $21,500.
