General Motors Co.'s Opel unit has reduced the price of its Ampera extended-range hybrid car in Europe to €38,300 from about €46,000.
The price cut follows a similar move in the U.S. a month ago, when GM dropped the price of the Chevrolet Volt to $35,000 (€26,400) to spur sales. Volt deliveries in America jumped 18% to nearly 3,400 units in August. GM produces both models in Detroit.
Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann tells reports the new Ampera price was prompted in part by the debut this week of all-electric versions of the Volkswagen Golf and Up! cars. But slow demand is another issue.
GM once expected to sell as many as 10,000 Amperas in Europe in 2012. But volume was roughly one-tenth that much last year. GM sold 23,500 Volts in the U.S. last year and hopes to reach 40,000 units in 2013.
