GM Confirms Plans for Electric Pickup Truck

General Motors Co. CEO Mary Barra says the company will eventually introduce its own all-electric pickup truck without providing details about the program.

Affirming GM’s plans to “create an all-electric future,” Barra tells investors the company is developing a full range of electric vehicles that will include fullsize pickups. Further information about the pickup will be revealed “when competitively appropriate,” the company says.

The pickup likely will be built on the modular EV platform GM announced in 2017. At the time, GM said the architecture eventually would carry 11 types of vehicles—ranging from small cars to large SUVs—with front-, rear- and all-wheel drive electric powertrains.

GM had been in talks with Rivian Automotive LLC about investing in the Plymouth, Mich., startup and using that company’s electric platform as the basis for future pickups. Negotiations reportedly broke down in early April because Rivian wanted to remain independent and sell its technology to multiple customers.

Last week, Ford Motor Co. stepped in with plans to invest $500 million in Rivian and partner with the company on an electric truck. Rivian also intends to launch its own EVs—the R1T pickup and R1S SUV— by the end of 2020.
