General Motors Co. has launched a Buick-badged version of its Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in hybrid in China.
The model, dubbed the Velite 5, debuted this week as a member of the “Buick Blue” lineup of new-energy vehicles. Buick introduced hybrid version of the LaCrosse midsize sedan in China a year ago. There are no immediate plans to offer the Velite 5 in the U.S.
The Velite 5 offers as much as 768 km (477 miles) of range in China, including 116 km (72 miles) in all-electric mode. That is about 80 km (50 miles) more than the Volt’s overall range, even though both cars use virtually identical powertrains: two electric motors, a lithium-ion battery and a 1.5-liter gasoline engine to power an onboard electrical generator.
GM says the car will retail in China between 229,100 and 259,400 yuan ($33,300-$37,700). Government subsidies reduce the net price to buyers by roughly 20%.
The Velite 5 is being produced alongside the Chevrolet Volt at GM’s factory in Hamtramck, Mich.
