Installations of turbocharged engines are expected to grow from 37% of the global new passenger vehicle market today to 61% by 2030, according to a new study conducted by just-auto's Qube Analysts arm.

The U.K.-based research firm predicts turbocharger use will grow at an average annual rate of 5.7%. This will be led by an 8.6% annual hike in China, which is expected to surpass western Europe to become the largest turbocharger market in the world by 2019.

China, which already is the largest producer and seller of passenger vehicles, is implementing more stringent emissions regulations and penalties for large displacement engines. This will result in the use of more fuel-efficient downsized engines, with Qube predicting turbocharged engines will reach a 64% penetration rate by 2030. Turbocharger installations accounted for 28% of the Chinese market in 2015 and are forecasted to grow to 47% by 2030.

India and Russia’s use of turbocharged engines also are expected to grow faster than the industry average. However, India’s projected increase has been adjusted downward to 7.9% per year from a previous estimate of 10.3% to reflect less favorable tax incentives and rising pump prices for diesel fuel. India is the second largest market for turbocharged diesel-powered vehicles after Europe.
