British engineering firm GKN Land Systems Ltd. has acquired a high-tech hybrid powertrain company from William Grand Prix Engineering Ltd.
The $13 million deal gives GKN a startup operation Williams bought in 2010 to develop a system that uses a flywheel to capture braking energy and feed it back into the drivetrain. Williams has the so-called kinetic energy recovery system, or KERS, in its Formula One race cars.
The Williams unit has been working on an iteration of the technology for buses. GKN, which has renamed the business GKN Hybrid Power, says it intends to present the system to global markets.
