Germany’s vehicle regulatory authority has sent a letter to owners of Tesla electric cars reminding them they must maintain unrestricted attention when using their car’s Autopilot self-driving feature, Reuters reports.
The government agency underscores Tesla’s own warning that the system is not a fully automated substitute for human control. But recent Tesla crash reports, including a fatality in Florida in May, indicate not all owners realize the feature cannot safely control the vehicle’s steering, braking and acceleration under all conditions.
Germany’s transport ministry has been conducting its own evaluation of the Autopilot feature. Der Spiegel reported earlier this week that the analysis has concluded the system is a “considerable traffic hazard.”
