Germany's UBA environmental agency says the country's transport sector lags all others in reducing carbon dioxide emissions from its vehicles, Reuters reports.
The sector has been ordered to lower its CO2 emissions by 10 million tons by 2020. But emissions haven't improved since 1990, thanks to increases in vehicle weight, car horsepower and transport by commercial truck. UBA says those gains have offset the sector's efforts to improve fuel efficiency.
Transport contributes about 20% of Germany greenhouse emissions, according to UBA. The agency notes the volume of goods transported by truck grew nearly one-third between 2000 and 2013.
