Germany's cabinet is supporting a bill that would enable owners of electric, fuel-cell and certain plug-in hybrid vehicles the right to drive in bus lanes and park free nationwide.
The measure, planned to take effect next spring, is intended to bolster EV sales and help the country achieve its goal of putting 1 million such vehicles on the road by 2020.
The law also covers plug-in hybrid cars that emit no more than 50 g/km of carbon dioxide and are capable to traveling more than 30 km in all-electric mode. Germany's Transport Ministry says qualifying vehicles would carry special labels to identify their right to the special privileges.
