Germany Affirms Target of 1 Million EVs by 2020

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government reiterates it goal of putting 1 million electric vehicles on the road by the end of the decade. But it did not say how it will reach that goal.
The government says Germany had about 21,300 EVs in use at the end of last year. Increasing the EV fleet will help the country meet a goal of cutting transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions 26% by 2030 compared with 1990 levels.
In May consultancy Roland Berger estimated that 600,000 electrics is a more realistic goal for the country. Germany does not offer direct incentives for EV purchases, and Merkel's administration said previously it does not intend to introduce any.
Germany's transport sector accounts for 16% (140 million metric tons in 2012) of the country's total carbon dioxide emissions, according to the government. It concedes it must step up efforts in order to meet its goal of cutting carbon emissions 40% by 2020.
