Nissan Motor Co.’s Infiniti arm plans to launch a platform for electrified vehicles based on the stylish Q Inspiration concept car it unveiled in January at the Detroit auto show.

The architecture will be scalable to support Infiniti’s full range of body types, starting with a sedan in 2023. Infiniti plans to build that model in China.

The new platform also will accommodate a variety of electrified powertrains. These likely will include all-electric configurations, hybrid systems teamed with Nissan’s new variable-compression turbocharged (VC-T) engine technology and range-extended models that use a small piston engine to recharge the battery.

The Q Inspiration (pictured) is powered by the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder VC-T engine that Infiniti is launching in its QX50 crossover vehicle. The system provides the performance of a gasoline-powered V-6 with the fuel efficiency of a 2.0-liter diesel, according to the carmaker.
