The average price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline in the U.S. declined 4 cents to $2.85 per gallon this week, AAA reports.
The drop breaks five months of persistently higher prices caused by the summer driving season, refinery maintenance work and worries about global oil supplies. AAA cautions that prices could rise again when the U.S. begins new sanctions on Iran, a large producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
Strained relations between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s largest producer, also could play a role in U.S. gasoline prices this autumn. One piece of good news for consumers: Domestic inventories of crude oil have been expanding for the past four weeks to their highest level since June.
