Some 4,300 workers at Ford Motor Co. have launched an indefinite strike after the company laid off 200 workers, Reuters reports.
The walkout at the factory in Sao Bernardo do Campo has idled production of small cars and commercial trucks there. Reuters notes that inflation, economic recession and tight credit have cut demand for cars and trucks in Brazil by about 20% and 45%, respectively, so far this year.
General Motors and Daimler, which last month announced a combined 2,300 job cuts at their commercial truck plants in Brazil, have since backed off on the layoffs after workers struck those facilities.
