United Auto Workers union members have begun voting on whether to accept a four-year contract tentatively reached last week with Ford Motor Co.
Voting by the UAW’s 52,900 Ford workers will continue at least through the middle of next week.
Meanwhile, ratification of a contract between the UAW and General Motors Co. remains on hold. The agreement was accepted by 55% of GM’s union workers overall last weekend, but it was rejected by skilled trades members.
The split vote requires the UAW’s executive board to either declare the contract ratified anyway or ask GM to reopen talks. The union’s constitution permits a return to the bargaining table to negotiate issues specific to the skilled trades, such as work rules. But it does not allow the UAW to revisit general economic issues.
Media reports suggest the union board’s decision on the GM contract could come as early as this weekend.
