Ford Motor Co.'s 50:50 joint venture with Russia's OJSC Sollers will eliminate 950 jobs at two factories in the country because of declining sales.
The company will drop one shift and 700 fulltime jobs at its factory outside St. Petersburg and 250 temporary jobs at its plant in Tatarstan. Both cuts are scheduled for June.
Ford blames the reductions on the weakening ruble and a consumer shift from small cars to SUVs. The company adds that it remains "absolutely committed" to the Russian market.
Ford-Sollers makes the Edge crossover, Explorer SUV, Focus small sedan, Galaxy minivan, Kuga crossover, Mondeo midsize sedan, S-MAX MPV, Transit commercial van and Tourneo Custom large van.
Car sales in Russia fell 5% last year and 4% in the first two months of 2014, according to the Moscow-based Assn. of European Businesses. Ford sales in the country over the two periods dropped 18% and 21%, respectively.
