Ford Motor Co. says it looks forward to working with president-elect Donald Trump to “support economic growth and jobs” in the U.S.
Trump repeatedly blasted Ford during his campaign for moving some of its production to Mexico. He threatened to impose a 35% tax on Mexican-made vehicles shipped into the U.S. to pressure Ford and other carmakers to repatriate jobs.
Trump reiterated his determination to protect jobs during a last-minute campaign stop in Michigan on Tuesday.
Ford confirmed in April it will spend $1.6 billion to erect a small-car factory in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, which will employ 2,800 workers. The company confirmed two months ago it plans to move all its North American small-car manufacturing to Mexico by 2018.
Reports suggest Ford plans to retool its last U.S. small-car plant, located outside Detroit, to build midsize pickup trucks and SUVs.
