Ford Motor Co. predicts light-vehicle sales in the U.S. will surpass 17 million units next year, their highest volume since 2001 and could reach as high as 17.5 million units.

Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of the Americas, made the forecast in an interview on CNBC television. Ford tells Bloomberg News it won't comment on the prediction until a scheduled meeting with investors on Monday.

Hinrichs cautions that sales could fall short if the American economy and housing market cool. The U.S. auto market grew 5% to 11.2 million units in January-August, but Ford's own sales were flat at 1.7 million vehicles, according to Autodata Corp.
