Ford Motor Co. says it will introduce 13 hybrid, plug-in and all-electric vehicles in China over the next four years in hopes to hiking the proportion of electrified units it sells there to 10%-25%.
Ford China CEO John Lawler tells reporters at the Beijing auto show the introductions will begin later this year when it debuts a hybrid option for its Mondeo midsize car. A plug-in hybrid variant of its C-Max Energi five-door hatch is due in early 2017.
Lawler says the bevy of electrified models is a response to China’s rapidly rising fuel economy rules. The government also is offering retail incentives for “new energy” vehicles that can travel at least 50 km (31 miles) on electric power alone.
Ford sales in China, which have been heavily driven by strong demand for relatively inefficient SUV/crossovers, grew 3% last year and were up 14% in the first quarter of 2016.
