Ford Motor Co. is likely to spend 40 million-50 million rupees ($629 million-$786 million) to build a major vehicle research and development center in Chennai, India, sources tell the Economic Times.
ET says Ford expects to sign an agreement this summer and announce the project in the second half of 2015.
One of the center's first projects will be to help develop a new small sedan to compete with the Honda City by about 2018, according to the Mumbai-based newspaper. It says the so-called B500 project also may spawn an MPV variant.
