Ford Motor Co. is moving forward with plans to launch the “Mustang-inspired” electric crossover vehicle it hinted at in January, Autocar reports.
Sources tell the U.K. enthusiast publication that the vehicle will be unveiled sometime next year, with deliveries starting in 2020. Codenamed CX430, the EV will share a platform with the next-generation Focus small car, according to the report.
Autocar speculates that the all-new model will have a hatchback-like body with a slightly raised driving position. Ford previously had said the EV will blend the performance characteristics of a pony car with the utility of an SUV. The carmaker teased the concept with a short video that shows a Mustang GT and Explorer entering a factory with pulsing electricity.
At the time, Ford said it was considering reviving the Mach 1 name for the vehicle. The company has used the name on several high-performance Mustangs between 1969 and 2004.
