Ford Motor Co. is launching a new smartphone app that will allow motorists to find available spots in nearby parking garages.

The free feature, which is part of the carmaker’s FordPass platform, initially will work in 160 cities across the U.S. The company didn’t say how many garages provide information for the service.

In addition to showing parking availability, the feature also lists parking prices and can help direct users to a garage. The app, which is compatible with Android and Apple devices, will store the address of a garage for future use.

Parking availability is updated in real time. Some garages also allow users to reserve and prepay for a spot. Transactions are handled by FordPay, which stores a user’s billing information to speed future reservations.

Citing a recent Harris Poll, Ford says Americans can spend as much as an hour a week searching for parking. The resulting frustration has caused more than one-third of adults to turn to alternative modes of transportation, according to the report.
