Ford Motor Co. is canceling one of three shifts and laying off 700 hourly and salaried employees at its factory in Wayne, Mich.
The plant makes the Focus small car, C-Max small MPV hybrid and electric versions of both vehicles. But demand for all the factory's models has cooled since fuel prices dropped.
The Wayne plant was idled for a combined 10 weeks last year to help trim dealer inventories. Ford says many of the laid-off workers are likely to transfer to other Ford production facilities within in the next 12 months.
