California-based Fisker Inc. plans to follow its $130,000 EMotion electric sedan, which is due next year, with a versatile $40,000 EV.

The design of the second model is nearly complete, CEO Henrik Fisker tells Automobile. He says the vehicle will feature a radical “futuristic looking” design—blending beauty with functionality—to attract buyers away from traditional cars and generate Tesla-like excitement.

As with the EMotion (pictured), Fisker says the new model will have a driving range of about 400 miles. At launch, the sedan likely will use a less-efficient LG Chem lithium-ion battery.

But Fisker is developing a next-generation solid-state battery that promises to have double the energy density of current batteries. The carmaker hopes to launch the technology in about five years, well ahead of other companies.

The new model, which Automobile suggests will likely be a crossover, is expected to be unveiled within the next 15 months. The EMotion was introduced in January at the CES electronics show in Las Vegas.
