Anaheim, Calif.-based Fisker Automotive Inc. says it plans to open a new tech center next spring for plug-in hybrid car development probably in southeastern Michigan.
The company, which has offered no details about the planned facility, says the center would be used to finalize work on its Atlantic extended-range electric sedan.
Fisker is scrambling to line up financing to enable it to begin making the $50,000-$60,000 Atlantic at a former General Motors Co. factory in Wilmington, Del. Plans to launch production there earlier this summer were shelved in February when the U.S. Dept. of Energy froze payment on a $529 million loan.
The company operated a tech center in Pontiac, Mich., for two years when it was developing its first EV, the Karma. Fisker closed that facility in 2010.
