A fund set up to compensate people injured by exploding Takata Inc. airbag inflators is ready to award $10 million in first-round payments.
The $125 million fund was created in 2017 for victims whose claims have not yet been settled. Individual awards are being calculated by a point system and will vary from about $600 to $608,000. The first-round award will cover 102 recipients, Automotive News reports, citing a court filing.
At least 24 people have been killed worldwide by shrapnel from the misfiring inflators. Nearly 300 others suffered significant injuries. More than 100 million Takata inflators are being recalled globally by 19 carmakers.
Takata also will pay $850 million to manufacturers to help cover their costs of recalling and replacing the inflators with more reliable units.
