CEO Carlos Tavares tells a French government committee that PSA Peugeot Citroen is "rebuilding" its electric car strategy, including a review of its EV supply arrangement with Mitsubishi Motors Corp.
Tavares says PSA will decide whether to build its own EVs or work through a partnership and, in either case, where to produce them. He indicates the yen-euro exchange rate will be a key factor.
MMC has been providing PSA with Citroen C-Zero and Peugeot iOn electric minicars since 2010 under an agreement to supply the French carmaker with 100,000 vehicles over five years. Both models are variants of MMC's i-MiEV electric sedan.
PSA had hoped to reach annual EV sales of about 30,000 units by 2015. But Automotive News Europe reported last August that MMC had suspended production of the C-Zero and iOn because of poor demand.
ANE cites figures from JATO Dynamics indicating that sales in 2013 of the Citroen, Peugeot and Mitsubishi variants plunged 80%, 85% and 45%, respectively.
