A decision by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne not to attend this week's Frankfurt auto show in Germany may mean the company is close to agreement on a new labor contract with the United Auto Workers union.
The UAW's current four-year pact expires at midnight tonight, along with similar agreements at Ford and General Motors.
On Sunday the union chose FCA as its strike target, making the company the focus of bargaining and the likely pattern setter for deals with the other two carmakers. Marchionne had been scheduled to conduct a news conference at the Frankfurt show on Tuesday before opting to be on hand for the labor negotiations.
