FCA has lagged other major carmakers in hybrid and electric-only powertrains. The company’s only all-electric model in the U.S. today is the Fiat 500e minicar. Two years ago CEO Sergio Marchionne infamously urged people not to buy the $32,700 car because FCA loses $14,000 on each one it sells.
But regulatory pressures are pushing the industry to introduce more EVs, even though demand is meager. Ford Motor Co. CEO Mark Fields told Bloomberg last week that the 55 EVs available in the U.S. this year have captured only 2.8% of passenger vehicle sales up only half a percentage point since 2012, when only 12 EVs were available.
Bloomberg says FCA also is developing an electric Maserati sports car to compete with Tesla Motors Inc. That car is not expected to be revealed at CES.
